Small Changes, Cozy Results for Transitioning from Summer to Fall
The leaves are changing, the temperatures are dropping, and ready or not, fall is just around the corner! There’s something about this time of year that makes us want to slow down, get cozy, and bring a little more warmth into our homes.
As the days get shorter and autumn begins to settle in, it’s the perfect time for a little seasonal refresh. And the good news? You don’t have to completely redecorate your home to make it feel ready for fall.
Sometimes, a few simple changes can make all the difference.
Think rich burgundy, warm orange, earthy browns, and golden tones layered in with your favorite pieces you already have. Swap a few lighter summer pillows for textured fall-inspired covers, drape a cozy throw over the sofa, add a candle or two, and bring in a little autumn foliage.
I especially love using decorative pillow covers for seasonal changes. They take up hardly any storage space and make it easy to change the look of a room without buying an entirely new set of pillows. Look for linen, plaids, or woven textures in rust, cognac, olive, cream, or burgundy.
A cozy throw blanket is another easy update. Drape one over the arm of a chair or the end of the sofa, and suddenly the room feels ready for cooler evenings. A solid-colored throw is a great choice if you want something you'll be able to use beyond just one season, while a subtle plaid or autumn-inspired pattern can add a little more seasonal personality.
Don't Forget the Front Porch
Fall decorating doesn't have to stop at the front door. Your porch is one of the easiest places to make a seasonal statement.
A simple fall wreath, a new doormat, a couple of pumpkins, or a lantern with a flameless candle can completely change the look of your entryway. I love the idea of layering a seasonal doormat over a larger neutral rug so you can easily switch out the top layer as the seasons change.
And if you don't have a large porch, don't worry! Even a small doorstep can feel welcoming with a small wreath, a couple of pumpkins, and a lantern.
A Few Fall Favorites
Here are a few pieces we're enjoying for making that transition from summer to fall:
Burgundy or rust-colored throw – An easy way to introduce those deeper fall colors without committing to a whole new color scheme.
Velvet or textured pillow covers – Look for shades like burgundy, rust, camel, olive, or warm cream.
Amber glass candles or candle holders – The warm glow feels especially cozy once the evenings start getting darker.
A simple fall wreath – Choose one with leaves, berries, eucalyptus, or muted pumpkins rather than something overly seasonal so you can enjoy it throughout the fall.
A layered front door mat – A neutral base mat paired with a smaller seasonal mat is an easy way to update your entry.
Add a few faux pumpkins either inside or out. I like ceramic or terracotta pumpkins because they add texture and character.
A fall-inspired vase or bowl – Fill it with faux branches, eucalyptus, dried stems, or even clippings from your own yard.

Remember, the goal isn't to make your home look like a completely different house every season. It's about making a few thoughtful swaps that reflect the current season while making your house feel like a home.
For me, that's the best part of seasonal decorating.
