We Saved $8,000 by DIY-ing Our Countertops

Why We Took This On

’ll admit it: when we decided our countertops needed an update, I really wanted new quartz. The problem? The quote was around $8,000.

So instead of spending thousands, I decided to see what I could do myself.

I used the Giani Marble Easy Epoxy Countertop Paint Kit in Belgotta Black to completely transform our existing countertops. The process involved a good bit of prep, painting the base color, creating the white marble veining, sanding, and finally adding the epoxy resin for that glossy, finished look.

And I have to say... I am thrilled with how they turned out.

The finished countertops are a dramatic black with white marble veining, and they look completely different from where we started. For roughly $250 in supplies instead of an $8,000 countertop installation, this project was definitely worth the effort.

Was it easy? Not exactly. There are several steps, and the epoxy stage especially requires some patience and careful attention. But if you're willing to take your time and follow the directions, I think this is a project a DIYer can absolutely tackle.

A few things we learned along the way: Take your prep seriously, don't rush the drying times, and give yourself plenty of time for the epoxy step. The finished result is worth it!
