Cruising Through Life

When we booked our very first cruise eight years ago, we had no idea what to expect. Would we feel trapped on a ship? Would we get seasick? Would cruising really live up to all the hype? Fast forward to today, and we’ve officially completed our 8th cruise with Royal Caribbean International, this time sailing through the Western Caribbean, and we can honestly say cruising has become one of our favorite ways to travel.

If you’ve ever considered taking a cruise but felt overwhelmed by the idea or just haven’t taken the plunge yet, this blog is for you. Cruising can feel intimidating at first because it’s different from a typical vacation. Your hotel travels with you, your dining is built in (or at least most of it), and every day brings a new destination. But once you experience it, you quickly understand why so many people become repeat cruisers.

One of the things we love most about cruising is just how effortless travel feels. From the moment we arrive at the port, the process is incredibly smooth. As soon as we pull in and drop off our bags, porters are there to greet us and take care of all the heavy lifting (pun intended). They handle your luggage from that point on, and it’s delivered right to your stateroom later that day.

Instead of packing and unpacking at multiple hotels, we settle in once and wake up in a new destination almost every morning. It really takes the stress out of travel and allows us to focus on simply enjoying the experience. Our boarding experiences have always been seamless too, with quick, easy check-ins and no major delays or hiccups.

Once we step onboard, the adventure really begins. On our recent Western Caribbean sailing aboard Allure of the Seas, we experienced the largest ship we’ve been on so far. With 18 decks, countless restaurants, lively bars, and nonstop entertainment, there was always something to explore.

We especially loved the Boardwalk, with its fun coastal carnival vibe, and Central Park, a peaceful open-air space filled with real trees, live plants, soft music, and twinkling white lights in the evening. It’s amazing how each area of the ship has its own personality, making the journey just as memorable as the destinations themselves.

For us, cruising isn’t only about the destinations, although we’ve loved visiting Alaska, the West Coast, Mexico, and the Western Caribbean. It’s really the perfect balance between exploring beautiful places and enjoying the experience onboard the ship itself.

Cruising can be as active and adventurous or as relaxed as you want it to be. You can fill your days with excursions like ziplining, snorkeling, or exploring local culture, or you can slow things down completely and lean into rest and relaxation. Spend your afternoons lounging by the pool with a drink in hand, unwind at the spa, or simply sit on your balcony and listen to the ocean roll by.

And even as experienced cruisers, we still pick up new tips on every trip. This time around, we learned the importance of booking certain entertainment reservations early, and once again we realized that packing less somehow always works better (I’m still a chronic overpacker). Every cruise teaches us how to cruise smarter, slower, and more intentionally.

One thing many first-time cruisers don’t realize is how much value is included. Your accommodations, meals, and entertainment are all part of your cruise package unless you choose specialty dining, which comes with an additional charge. We personally enjoy a mix of both the specialty dining options and the main dining room and buffet restaurants. For us, it’s all about balance and variety.

After eight cruises, we still find ourselves excited every time we step onboard. Not because every cruise is identical, but because each one offers something new to discover — new places, new experiences, new memories, and yes, always a few new lessons learned along the way. And honestly, we’re already thinking about cruise number nine.
