A December Escape to Cancun (Sun, Snacks & Zero Regrets)
We kicked off December with a much-needed trip to Cancun, and honestly? It was exactly what we needed. Easy flight, direct shuttle to the hotel, and margaritas within walking distance. We were off to a strong start.
Most days followed a very solid routine: breakfast (when it wasn’t wildly overpriced), pool time, reading, repeat. I managed to read multiple books while rotating between the pool and strategically placed shade. Across the street from the hotel was our favorite mini market, where we discovered amazing grilled sandwiches, snacks, and bottled water, which quickly became our lifeline.
We explored the hotel district, browsed souvenir shops, made a couple of Starbucks stops (no shame), and found a massive grocery store where we almost bought a timeshare… purely by accident. At this point, the timeshare guys recognized us and gave us grief every time we walked in. We considered it part of the experience.
One standout restaurant was at Casa Tequila, where the ceviche was absolutely incredible; fresh, flavorful, and perfectly balanced with just the right kick of spice. The margaritas were not light or weak, making it a perfect pairing.
Another unforgettable experience was Mr. Taco, where the waiters literally delivered drinks on their heads while performing a full-on Mexican hat dance. Unfortunately, we didn’t order drinks that night, but now it’s officially on the list for our next visit!
We also ventured out to Mercado 28 for local shopping, dodging rain while bargaining like pros (or at least enthusiastic amateurs). Between tequila tastings, jewelry finds, and giant beers paired with an unreasonable amount of wings, it was a solid day.
The trip wasn’t without its lessons:
Hotel food was pricey and limited
Drinking a margarita on an empty stomach is a bold (and questionable) choice
Economy seats feel much smaller on the way home
Speaking of the flight home… seven cramped hours later, my shoulders still haven’t forgiven me. The next morning, I immediately upgraded our seats for our next trip. Growth.
All in all, Cancun delivered sunshine, good food, plenty of pool time, and just enough chaos to keep things interesting. Would we go back? Absolutely. But next time, we’re bringing better pillows, and flying premium.
What We’d Do Differently Next Time
Upgrade seats on the flight from the start. Goodbye cramped economy!
Bring breakfast options for early mornings or avoid pricey buffets.
Avoid drinking margaritas on an empty stomach—lesson learned.
Check hotel amenities ahead—local music by the pool would have been a nice touch.
